About Us

Help for Progress was founded in 1981 to assist with the myriad of problems and constraints confronting rural Belize.  Our combined technical knowledge and practical experience in areas of agriculture; refugee and migrant issues, environmental management, micro credit services; and socio-economic issues, enables us, with the support of our partners in development, to address issues for women, small scale farmers and producers.

HfP has in the past, been the recipient of project funding from HIVOS, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees UNHCR; Canada Fund CFLI; Inter American Foundation, IAF; APSO/DCI now Irish Aid; OXFAM GB Guatemala and other funding agencies. However, since 1994 HfP has sustained its programme of work through revenues earned from consultancy work carried out by staff members, project implementation (administrative fees) and interest earned from the micro-credit programme. Although the NGO’s external context has drastically changed, poverty and community needs remain a reality.

Since 1999, HfP has acted as the local counterpart for the UNHCR with respect to refugee protection issues in Belize.

Working with micro-enterprise and credit; productive projects such as cacao and honey production, community development and participatory activities, HfP has developed successful strategies for enhancing rural involvement in contemporary society.

To realize the above mentioned, the organization addresses the following program areas:
  1. Community Development
  2. Microcredit
  3. Refugees and Displaced
  4. Organizational Development
